The coat of arms was originally approved for the 189th Field Artillery, Oklahoma National Guard on 18 December 1925. It was redesignated for the 189th Field Artillery Battalion, Oklahoma National Guard on 7 October 1942. It was redesignated for the 189th Artillery, Oklahoma National Guard on 1 November 1960. The insignia was redesignated for the 189th Field Artillery on 19 July 1972. The coat of arms was redesignated for the 189th Regiment, Oklahoma Army National Guard, with blazon and symbolism revised on 29 April 1997.
